In 1823 Hokusai authored a picture book entitled Ippitsu Gafu (i.e., One Brushstroke Picture Album). It included the eleven pages of bird pictures shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Hokusai depicted his bird subject from different angles using a single brushstroke to outline a simplified version of its body shape. These pictures were presumably meant to entertain viewers by depicting birds in a unique way.
